Freebie Fridays - Playtex Sport - Free Sample!

Tampon ChandelierImage by Irish Typepad via Flickr

I ordered my free sample of Playtex Sport Tampons, and I think you should too. It includes 2 regular and 1 super absorbent tampon.

Free tampons! Awesome! And what's really great is that if you're interested in purchasing these, you can try them out before you buy them. Order your free sample, and give these suckers a test run and let's see if these suckers do what they claim.

FYI -the picture here is a tampon chandelier. LOL Thought it was pretty funny.

Save Money to the Extreme

Toilet paperImage via Wikipedia

I recently read an article over at How I Save Money about WallyPop, a business that sells re-usable items that most people throw away, like cloth diapers, hankies, cloth napkins, and other things.

While those items make a lot of sense to just about everyone, there were a few items I found on their site to be, well, interesting. I'm not sure that I would use them personally, but I thought it was worth bringing up to my readers who are dead serious about saving money and going green.

Cycle Pads - these are menstrual flow pads that you wash and re-use.
Family Wipes - it's toilet paper you wash and reuse.

I never knew people were interested in such products, and I personally don't think I would use them, but like I said, if you're interested in saving money with reusable products, check them out at Wallypop.

Save Money in the Laundry Room

The Energy Star logo is placed on energy-effic...Image via Wikipedia

Saving money and going green are both hip trends right now, with economic recession and environmental activism both going red hot. You'll notice that there are several posts dealing with ways to save money and protect the environment throughout my blog, because saving money and the environment are both very important to me personally.

I'm always looking for new ways to save money around the house while conserving our natural resources and protecting the environment. One way I've done this is in the laundry room.

Save Money in the Laundry Room

1. Try a front loading washer and dryer that are Energy Star certified. The washers use less water, drastically cutting your water consumption. I found a great set at Home Depot that cost us $1000 total, which is incredibly inexpensive for front loaders. Best of all, they sing to me when the cycle is done. :)

2. Use cold water whenever possible. 80-85% of the energy used when you're doing the laundry is used to heat the water. I always use cold water, except when I'm washing whites that are horribly soiled (like gym socks - yuck!). I don't use special cold water detergents, although those are available for purchase and supposedly clean your clothes better in cold water than regular detergents. If you must use heated water, however, reduce the heat from HOT to WARM. This will cut the energy of one load in half!

3. Do a full load. Don't put a few items you need for tomorrow in the washer and dryer without a full load. This is a waste of electricity/gas, water and detergent. Always do a full load, or no load at all.

4. Don't forget the wash. We use to do this a lot. We would run the washer and then forget we had clothes in there, only to find them two days later while trying to find where that smell was coming from. That one load had to be washed about 2 more times before it stopped smelling of mildew. How gross, right? And, a complete waste of energy and water. Shame on us! Take a lesson from me, you'll save a great deal of money and energy if you wash each load only once. You'll also avoid running the washer with a bottle of bleach to remove that smell left behind. Trust me on this one. :)
